Bitter English fans vs Sweet Barça football

Filed under: sports — newritings @ 4:44 pm

When Porto won the 2003-2004 European Champions League, the bitter English media were highly critical of the Dragons counter attacking tactics that garnered them the top prize. The bitterness stemmed from the fact that the low-budget Portuguese side had the temerity to eliminate Manchester United in the quarter finals.

Manchester United and most recently Chelsea have gone to the Camp Nou and, and, employed what can only be described as anti-football tactics. Chelsea by the way was not any better at home for the second leg of the semi-final. According to the English football pundits and their local poodles, it is acceptable and admirable to defend dourly, -with virtually no attacking intent, hoof the ball up field, and of course cynically break up attacks using unfair methods . What hypocrisy , how on earth can this be described as a “master class of defending” by pseudo football experts .

In contrast how entertaining and at times exhilarating was the Barcelona approach , adhering strictly to their philosophy of fantasy football. This was commendably achieved, using a total of 8 players , over the 2 leg semi-final, that were developed at their La Cantera academy.
